FDOT I-4 Construction Projects in Polk County

Aerial view of I-4 at U.S. Highway 27 showing the Moving I-4 Forward projectsThe Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently announced the construction schedule for two projects along Interstate 4. To provide immediate relief from traffic congestion, FDOT is prioritizing the construction of two congestion relief lanes along a 7.5-mile stretch from east of U.S. Highway 27 to east of World Drive. Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with the lanes opening by the end of the year. These new lanes will be located on the inside of the existing mainlines.

Following the opening of these lanes, additional work will expand I-4 to 10 lanes at the Champions Gate Boulevard and World Drive interchanges as a part of the Accelerated Start phase. This early expansion is part of FDOT’s Moving Florida Forward initiative, which accelerates projects along the I-4 Corridor. As part of this initiative, two key projects are moving forward:

Project No. 201210-8 (Segment A): This project, from east of U.S. Highway 27 to west of State Road 429, will add lanes and capacity. The Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) will be updated to reflect accurate project limits, delivery methods and costs, moving all phases into the 2021–2025 time band.

Project No. 431456-6 (Segment B): This project, from west of State Road 429 to east of World Drive, will also add lanes and capacity. This project will cross between Polk and Osceola counties. The LRTP will be modified to include updated project limits, delivery methods, and costs, with all phases shown in the 2021–2025 time band.

These projects aim to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along the I-4 Corridor. For more information regarding the projects, contact Polk TPO or FDOT.
