Safety Action Plans
Polk TPO Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Action Plans
In 2016, the Polk TPO produced two key studies: The Pedestrian Safety Action Plan and the Bicycle Safety Action Plan. These studies were jointly updated in 2020 to address ongoing safety concerns.
Addressing Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety
Over the last 10 years, more than 2,400 bicyclists and pedestrians have been injured while traveling on roads in Polk County. To combat this issue, the Polk TPO developed Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Action Plans to identify specific actions to reduce the number and severity of these crashes.
Plan Details
The plans highlight the need for improved pedestrian and bicycle safety through comprehensive analyses of crash data. They review where, when and how crashes occur, identify high crash areas within Polk County, and prioritize these areas for detailed analysis as part of roadway safety audits.
Strategies for Improvement
The plans propose a combination of engineering, education and law enforcement strategies to enhance safety. These strategies reflect best practices and target the types of crashes most common in Polk County.
