School Sidewalk Coverage

Performance Target

The Polk TPO has set a performance target of 100% sidewalk coverage within one mile of all schools. This means having a sidewalk on at least one side of collector and arterial roads.

Evaluation and Analysis

The TPO conducted an evaluation of sidewalk coverage within one mile of 140 public schools in Polk County during 2018-2019. This evaluation involved a systematic Geographic Information System (GIS)-based analysis to identify schools in the bottom third percentile for sidewalk coverage. A more detailed analysis of sidewalk coverage and gaps was then conducted for the 10 lowest-scoring schools.

Findings

The analysis identified gaps in the sidewalk network on collector and arterial roads within one mile of Polk County public schools. It also included an evaluation of lighting conditions to ensure safety.
