Vision Zero Polk
Vision Zero
SAFETY IS THE KEY
“Vision Zero” is a goal. The Polk TPO strives to eliminate all fatalities and serious injuries that occur during the everyday business of transportation. A Vision Zero approach assumes that human users , i.e., drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists will make mistakes as they move from place to place and that the cost of these mistakes should not be death or serious injury.
The Polk TPO has a long-standing goal of a safer road network for all road users. We have carried out campaigns and developed plans and teaching materials to help provide a safer experience for all road users.
Efforts include setting policies for safer roads, planning for safer roads, identifying ways to make safer routes to schools and providing teaching materials for school children of all ages on how to be a safer pedestrian or bicyclist.
The TPO has conducted many other planning studies and projects related to safety that you can view below.
Polk Vison Zero Action Plan

Polk TPO is preparing a Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to create safe and livable streets for all, under the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Safe Streets and Roads For All (SS4A) FY 2022 Action Plan Grant.
Speak Up for Safer Streets Community Workshops
Does your daily commute take you down Kathleen Road in Lakeland or along 42nd Street or Wahneta Road in Winter Haven on your way to work, school or home? These three roads are ranked among the highest injury roadways in Polk County, with pedestrians and bicyclists facing some of the greatest risks. That’s why the Polk Transportation Planning Organization is inviting you to a Speak Up for Safer Streets workshop in your community.
At these workshops, Polk TPO transportation planners will sit down with you and your community, listen to your experiences and talk through the challenges you face on these roads every day. Together, you’ll look at possible safety solutions, ones that reflect the real needs of the people who live, work and travel is these areas. As part of Vision Zero Polk, we’re working toward a future with zero fatalities and severe injuries. Real change starts with the people who use these roads every day and that includes you. Join us. Share your experiences and shape safer streets for your family and your community.
